Woodland State Airport - W27 (W27)

Description

A unique little airport, visible from I-5, a well-traveled interstate, and with the runway sitting alongside - and below the elevation of the highway - anytime a plane lands there, a dozen drivers have got be very surprised when they see a plane drop down and zoom by right next to them. Despite its prominence, Woodland State is a quiet, unassuming little strip. The runway is just 1953' x 25', making it a pretty tight fit for many of us. Winds on approach can often be strong, gusty, and a real handful, making that short, skinny runway seem even less inviting. But it's in a scenic location (if you can say that for an airport that sits just a few yards away from a major interstate highway, and that has a sewage plant immediately to the north): the Lewis River runs along the east side of the field, and although there are no services on the field itself, there are multiple food options and other services within easy walking distance in the town of Woodland, just to the north.
